The Father Vincent Capodanno Catholic Academy has been providing a Catholic education to Staten Island children for over a century. The school serves UPK and K through 8th grade students from the neighborhood as well as children whose parents work nearby.
Community projects include the Hometown Heroes Book. Five volumes of the Hometown Heroes Book have been student-produced and published. This series of books document the military experience of 250 Staten Island veterans.
The school has received notes from George Bush, the Obamas and former POW Senator John McCain supporting this living history project and its importance. Students are currently interviewing veterans for their sixth book.
Hometown Heroes has provided our students with a birds’ eye view of the history of our country from soldiers who were there living through these tumultuous times. The Father Vincent Capodanno Catholic Academy is proud that copies of these books hold a place of honor in all of the public and Catholic school libraries on Staten Island, further cementing our desire to be partners in patriotism with all of our neighbors. Our veterans’ first-hand accounts and insights have been invaluable to our students.
The Father Vincent Capodanno Catholic Academy remains committed to promoting patriotism and awareness of Veterans’ issues. We look forward to hosting our veterans for our annual Veterans Breakfast in November and our Veterans Ice Cream Social in May.
